I love my birthday — March 21st! It’s the first day of spring (well, except when the first day is March 20th). Either way, spring is my end-all-be-all favorite season. And the days up to it are often a struggle for many people, myself included. Gray, cold days mean less sunshine and oftentimes less exercise — things that help lift one’s spirits — so it can be easy to feel down and sluggish this time of year.
And yet, there are simple things we can do to beat the winter blues, so to help us make our way to the brighter, cheerier weather of spring, I will share a series of tips from now until spring to remind us of what we can do to feel better despite the winter weather (by the way, these tips are a preview to what you’ll find in the mental health app I’m creating).
Tip #1
For many of us, it can make you just want to hibernate knowing it will be dark by the time you get out of work during the winter or perhaps you’re feeling stir crazy from being inside a lot. A great way to make it through is to give yourself something to look forward to. It can be something as simple as knowing you’ll make a mug of salted caramel hot chocolate when you get home or having an awesome plan to take a hot eucalyptus bubble bath before bed. If you find yourself feeling down, focus on what you can look forward to. What would perk up your spirits knowing it’s on the horizon?
Today my heart sank when I learned we have a big ice storm forecasted for St. Louis. Ugh. Blah. Sigh.
Rather than focus on the storm, I am giving myself something to look forward to. I am focusing on the fact that there are just 67 days until spring! Yes. This too shall pass. Onward and upward!
